Your Choices and Their Impact
Hey y'all! Thank you all so much for playing the demo for A Little Inconvenience. It warms my little, sicko heart to see players having a blast with it. Today, I wanted to talk about the game's choices and how they'll impact your story.
The Meters (right now)
As of right now, there are three hidden meters in the game.
- Affection (Sabrina + Darius)
- Darius' Anger
- Darius' Obsession
Affection
Affection is self explanatory: acting friendly or honest (depends) with Darius will yield affection points. Doing the opposite however, can potentially retract from your total. Now, what are the other two meters, how are they calculated, and do they affect Darius' behavior?
Anger
Anger is how negatively Darius will view the world and those around him. Actions like ignoring him can result in a point in anger, and he may even act colder towards Sabrina which could sour their relationship. He will also be willing to take more brutal or riskier action in order to achieve his goal because his judgement is being clouded. There are ways to reduce anger, like acting nice or explaining yourself (before it's too late).
Obsession
Obsession is an interesting mechanic where if Sabrina shows a high level of care/love for Darius as opposed to a gradual progression or if she's overly playful with him, he may see that she loves him already and his obsession worsens. High obsession points will get him to reveal bits of information he may not reveal otherwise (how did he know about Sabrina's piggy bank?), and take really...questionable approaches to show his love and dedication. The higher this is, the worse it'll get. Like anger, you can lose points in obsession if you keep Darius grounded. Admittedly, this is one variable I'll need to keep a careful eye on as I'm creating the game to ensure its point placements make sense and they aren't mixed up with affection too much because I don't want to "penalize" the player for genuinely wanting to better their relationship with Darius. Moreso, I want them to be mindful that going headstrong isn't always the best approach with him.
Darius will remember that...
Aside from these mechanics, what you do or say can come back up later. In the demo, what happened after Tristan left the store had an effect on the closing scene. For example, if you apologized, Darius will mention that. If you said nothing, Darius will believe Tristan is a bad influence on you.
Another instance of a choice he'd remember: if you talked to him about the ceramic racoon Sabrina was working on, AND if you agreed to give him the chonky racoon which only happens if you talked about pottery and your affection is high enough with him.
There's another interesting choice he'll make note of, but I won't reveal what it was. I like to keep people in suspense, and if you're wondering what it could be, I recommend exploring the game a bit more and trying out all the choices. ;)
